| Forest Hall Bed and Breakfast: Being in a wheelchair poses some challenges in itself. Finding wheelchair accessible holiday accommodation is an almost impossible challenge. This all changed when we found a guest house in Walmer, Port Elizabeth with the name of Forest Hall. The stylish guest house and friendly staff is situated in a quiet, peaceful and central area with the wheelchair accessible Walmer Park shopping centre close by. This guesthouse is not only wheelchair friendly, but also accessible. You’ll find a lot of holiday establishments on the internet under the wheelchair friendly category, but when you phone them, the room will either be too small or the bathroom not equipped for using the wheelchair in the shower. From our first telephonic conversation with James Bolton from Forest Hall, it was clear that this guest house was exactly what we we’re looking for. On our first visit we’ve stayed in a fully equipped flat, which is now used by his mother, who is also in a wheelchair. With our second visit, that lasted two weeks, we stayed in the wheelchair accessible honeymoon suite. Ask any person that is wheelchair bound, or his/her helper about the importance of nearby parking and they will tell you that it is a necessity. Especially when you are on holiday and have a lot of language and wheelchair accessories to carry around. The parking at the guest house is close to the room and a ramp is available for easy access. The room is spacious enough for moving around in the wheelchair. The bed and toilet seat is at the correct level for someone in a wheelchair to transfer to, and from without strain. It is also equipped with a small kitchen area and everything is on a comfortable and reachable height for handicapped persons. James is always willing to change the settings according to your needs. Being a quadriplegic makes it impossible to transfer into a bath or onto a shower bench. The shower at Forest Hall is adopted for easy access with a wheelchair. It can also be used by someone in a standing position, seeing that there is a shower head mounted to the wall and a hand held shower available. A bonus feature for married couples is that there is a big, luxury bath in the same room! This guest house feels like home, and is a place where you can stay in and watch the variety of bird species, swim or read a book. Or even watch one of the many channels available on DSTV or finish your business over the internet. There are not a lot of guest houses that is graded as universally accessible in the Mobility category by the South African Tourism Grading council. We feel that Forest Hall should definitely be one of them and we will highly recommend this guest house to anyone with a disability. Best Regards. Anton and Anna-Marie Welman |
